However, that doesn’t mean NEVs are completely immune to breakdowns. The battery is a major component that can cause issues. Batteries can degrade over time, which reduces their capacity to hold a charge. Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can also affect battery performance. In very cold weather, the battery’s ability to deliver power can be significantly reduced, and it might take longer to charge. On the other hand, in extremely hot conditions, the battery can overheat, which not only affects performance but can also shorten its lifespan.

Another area where NEVs can face problems is the charging infrastructure. Although the number of charging stations is increasing, there are still some regions where it can be difficult to find a reliable charging point. And if a charging station malfunctions, it can leave the vehicle stranded. Also, fast – charging can sometimes put stress on the battery, potentially leading to long – term damage.

The electrical system in NEVs is also a critical part. Any issues with the wiring, sensors, or the electronic control unit (ECU) can cause problems. For instance, a faulty sensor might give incorrect readings to the ECU, which could then lead to improper functioning of the vehicle. And since these are high – tech components, diagnosing and fixing the problem can be more complicated than in a traditional vehicle.

But here’s the thing: the automotive industry as a whole is constantly evolving, and the same goes for the NEV sector. Manufacturers are investing heavily in research and development to improve battery technology. New battery chemistries are being developed that are more durable, have a higher energy density, and are less affected by temperature. For example, solid – state batteries are on the horizon, which could potentially solve many of the current battery – related problems.

In terms of the electrical system, better quality control and more advanced diagnostic tools are being used. This means that problems can often be detected earlier and fixed more efficiently. And as for the charging infrastructure, governments and private companies are working together to expand and improve it. There are now more fast – charging stations, and the technology behind them is also getting better.

When we compare the overall breakdown rates of NEVs and ICEVs, it’s not as clear – cut as saying that one is more prone to breakdowns than the other. In some aspects, like mechanical failures, NEVs have an edge. But in areas related to the battery and electrical system, they do face unique challenges.

However, it’s important to note that as the technology matures and more NEVs are on the road, the reliability is only going to improve. Just like when the first ICEVs were introduced, they also had many teething problems, but over time, they became more reliable.
